GC: There is a coherent majority attestation with a broad A-related basis for a. The b attestation has a small A-related core accompanied by incoherencies.

TP: Variant b, “by night”, fits the context smoothly, while a, “in the night”, poses the question of which specific night might be meant,[1] perhaps the night after they had reached Troas. However, the context does not require such specification. Hence it is more likely that the article was secondarily omitted than added.

The square brackets enclosing the article in NA26-28 and GNT3-5, left without comment by Metzger, are probably due to the agreement of 03 and 05 in omitting it, but the lack of coherence in the attestation (and between 03 and 05 in particular) suggests that the agreement is coincidental.
