RE: Indexing - folio number help required

Manuscript 30449 is an odd duck, and I'm having problems with assigning Folio Numbers:

Matthew starts with an illustration on a right hand page (p. 110), then on the Verso (p.120), it has another illustration at the top of the page and the text starts right below it.

I'm confused about where the index folio numbers should start in the case where the text starts on the Verso. It seems reasonable that I can't start with 1r on a Verso (since 'r' and Verso would be a contradiction), so I started on the 'Verso' with '1v' and didn't put any folio number on page 110 which was the full-page illustration on the right-hand page. Then I continued on the next right-hand page (p.130) with 2r, and then '2v' on its Verso. My numbering sequence  is: 1r, 1v, 2r, 2v . . .  .

Part way through Matthew, I came across other people's indexing, and their folio numbers don't match mine. Some had a hyphenated number and it appears like they started numbering from the Verso page (page 120) where the text started and they are counting each page-face as modern books are now numbered, e.g. 1,2,3,4, and then appending a 'r' or 'v' to describe whether the page-face is 'right' or 'left'. I was under the impression that we are supposed to count each sheet (front and back) as one, and number them: 1r, 1v, 2r, 2v, 3r, 3v.

So, in summary, I need clarification on:

1. Where do you start counting the folio numbers? (On the first page-face where the text starts, irregardless of whether it occurs on a right page or left page),

2. The proper counting sequence? (It is unclear if a sheet - front plus back - is counted as one, or if you count page-faces like in modern books. Maybe in the instruction manual, it would be helpful to define the word 'page', as distinguished from 'page-face' or 'sheet'.).

Anyway 30449 will need some editing by the Administrators, or someone with the authority to change another indexer's work, so that the 'folio numbers' are all the same and are numbered properly.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

sincerely

Robert Crawford

Thanks for writing! Many manuscripts already have the folios numbered so all you have to do is copy what’s there. This manuscript is no exception. Check the top right corner of each right page (recto). We’ve re-indexed the first 5 folios so that they correspond with the manuscript. See if that makes sense.
